My name is a combination of two of the four Little Women characters: Amy and Beth. You can imagine the pre-teen angst I felt upon learning that Amy was the not-so-kind one and Beth was the sickly girl who dies young. I appealed to my parents to rename me Jo because she was the strong, bold and likeable tomboy. My appeals were denied on the grounds that Joe was my Dad’s name and he wasn’t so keen on naming his daughter Jo, Jr. I probably pouted and stamped up to my room and scribbled “Jo” all over the pages of my diary.
