A Hybrid Approach to Capacity Building
My approach to helping people build their capacity to relate, create, communicate and collaborate combines leading theory and cutting–edge practice in the fields of communication, conflict studies and teaching.
Communication & Conflict Studies Expertise.
I bring to my work more than 1,500 hours of graduate level education in mediation, conflict resolution, interpersonal dynamics, intercultural communications, human behavior and growth, and organizational systems. Rather than subscribing to a single theory or approach, or relying on a limited number of cookie-cutter training activities, my training toolbox has depth and breath, which allows me to create personal, powerful, playful and practical experiences for my clients.
Practical Teaching Experience.
In addition to extensive knowledge of the field, I have nearly 15 years of practical experience making learning fun, effective, and engaging for high school students, traditional college-aged students, and adult learners. I have a thoroughly interdisciplinary academic background (an undergraduate degree in English and Philosophy, and graduate degrees in Literature & Culture and Mediation & Conflict Studies) and I teach a diverse number of subjects at the college level (intercultural communication, conflict resolution, philosophy, ethics, literature, creative writing, critical thinking). Unlike other communication and conflict resolution professionals, I know how to apply theory to practice to inspire learning, create a culture of serious fun and teach practical and applicable skills that help people build the capacity to realize remarkable relationships.
Practical Leadership Experience
When designing educational trainings with real-life impact, I draw from my long-term professional leadership experiences in public and private educational settings where I have played a number of roles, including boarding school teacher; college and graduate school instructor; summer residential academic program director; enrichment program director for at-risk high school students; contributor to a state-wide pre-college curriculum initiative as a full-service school director, overseeing a constellation of social, health, wellness, and recreational services to a wide range of at risk students.
Simply put, I have worked with thousands of high school students and their parents, in a myriad of settings, in a number of capacities. I have built collaborative relationships with hundreds of educators and other professionals who support high school and college students. And I draw from these experiences and relationships to design relevant and practical trainings that thoughtfully address my clients' specific training goals.
